The art market in Bagamoyo – the stronghold of the Tanzanian artist scene, right on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Some artists are sitting here together, they are eating right now. Others paint – each in his own time, in his own style.
Along the way, people talk, negotiate and help each other.
Tourists walk through the narrow passages, past the hundreds of paintings that were made here. With the smell of oil paint in their noses, they buy the artwork. They ensure the artists their income – money from which they will provide for their families. But these scenes belong to the past…
Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, no tourists fly to Tanzania. Nobody comes to Bagamoyo, nobody walks through the narrow passages of the art market. Nobody can buy the paintings from the artists, nobody can see their art.
But the artists and their families have to shop, they have to eat, they have to live.
While some artists still opened small tomato or rice stands, many of them are now unemployed. In Tanzania, there is no unemployment benefit or Corona aid.
For the artists, things can’t go on like this.
“Asante Sanaa” can give them a new path! We create opportunities for Tanzanian artists to continue to finance their lives through art. On T-shirts and hoodies, people can buy the artwork without traveling to Tanzania to do so. Asante Sanaa becomes a larger exhibition venue through each supporter.
We want to show people from Germany how cooperation between different countries can work and be profitable for both sides. All this can be created “thanks to art” – Asante Sanaa!

Artists are sitting together again, exchanging ideas about the day, playing cards on the side. Soon they start painting. They got the chance to spread their art again. It’s not like before – they can’t see the buyers, can’t negotiate. But the most important thing is that they can pay their children’s school fees again. And, that there will be another hot meal on the table tonight.
